Review: Brayan's Gold

Brayan's Gold by Peter V. Brett

*Note: This is a short story in the world of The Warded Man*

Summary
Arlen is an apprentice Messenger and is about to go on his first overnight mission with a trained Messenger. He has to take some very precious and dangerous cargo to the snowy mountains of Count Brayan's gold mines, and avoid being cored by the demons. There, he is as reckless as ever, but with great risks, perhaps great rewards can be had.

Commentary
Arlen is the main character in The Warded Man universe, and this is a story about some of the time which was passed by in the first book. To truly appreciate this side story, it is much better to have read The Warded Man before proceeding. As such, it is more of a fan piece.

I really enjoyed this little side adventure about Arlen's Messenger days because it shows Arlen's recklessness as well as how he continues to have motivation to fight the monsters in the night. In the novella, we are once again reminded of Arlen's basic goodness and willingness to fight for justice and happiness for all.

Bottom line, this is a very welcome addition to The Warded Man series, and if you can get your hands on a copy you should. Otherwise, you don't have to worry too much just read the main story line because it is AWESOME.

I love a good short story, but it's nice to know that it is part of a bigger series. I generally write short stories, but lately I have been working on a much larger novel. Thanks for the review!
